The Ministry of Education, Government of India, offers Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Research Associateship (RA) opportunities for foreign nationals from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This initiative allows foreign students and teachers to conduct advanced research and pursue M.Phil, Ph.D., or postdoctoral studies in Indian universities, fostering educational and cultural exchange between India and developing countries.

What Is This Fellowship Program About?

The program aims to help foreign students and teachers undertake advanced studies and research in India. They can work on important subjects like science, humanities, and social sciences, helping strengthen India’s relations with their home countries through education and knowledge-sharing.

Program Benefits

  • For JRF Students:
    • Fellowship of ₹12,000 per month for the first two years, increasing to ₹14,000 for the remaining period based on progress.
    • Additional financial assistance for study materials and other expenses.
  • For RA Students:
    • Fixed monthly fellowship of ₹16,000 for four years.
    • Financial support for research materials and accommodation assistance.

Students may also receive hostel accommodation, and if not available, housing support will be provided.

Eligibility Criteria

  • For JRF:
    • Male applicants must be under 35 years old; females under 40.
    • A good academic record in bachelor’s and master’s degrees is required.
  • For RA:
    • Male applicants should be under 40 years old; females under 45.
    • A completed doctorate degree with published research is needed.

Application Process

Foreign students can apply through Indian embassies in their home countries. Applications are screened and sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for final selection. Successful candidates will be notified, and the fellowship begins after approval from Indian authorities.
