Delhi Assembly elections approach, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is fully in election mode. Along with the list of candidates, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is launching attractive schemes for the people of Delhi. Today, he announced a new welfare scheme for women called the “Delhi Mahila Samman Nidhi Yojana.” Under this scheme, women in Delhi will receive a monthly allowance of ₹1,000. Moreover, if AAP returns to power, the amount will be increased to ₹2,100 per month after the elections.
Eligibility for the Scheme
- Women above the age of 18 years.
- Must possess a Delhi Voter ID card.
- The scheme is applicable to all eligible women residing in Delhi.
Implementation of the Scheme
The Delhi government has initiated the process of transferring ₹1,000 to women’s bank accounts. However, due to the upcoming elections in 10-15 days, the amount will be disbursed post-election.
Registration Details
Kejriwal also announced that registration for the scheme will begin soon, with a nominal registration fee of ₹100.
Opposition’s Response
The opposition, particularly the BJP, has criticized the scheme, calling it an extension of the “freebie culture” and questioned the financial feasibility of such initiatives. However, Kejriwal confidently responded that he knows how to manage the budget efficiently and ensure proper fund allocation.
Similar Welfare Initiatives Across India
This type of welfare scheme has proven to be an effective electoral strategy in various states. Some notable examples include:
- Jharkhand: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government launched the “Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana,” providing ₹1,000 per month to women aged 21-50 years, which contributed to their electoral victory.
- Maharashtra: The ruling coalition launched the “Ladli Behna Yojana,” offering ₹1,000 monthly to women aged 21-65 years, which played a crucial role in securing votes.
- Madhya Pradesh: The previous government launched the “Ladli Behna Yojana,” providing ₹1,000 monthly to women, resulting in a significant electoral win for the BJP.
Conclusion
The Delhi Mahila Samman Nidhi Yojana is expected to benefit around 38 lakh women in Delhi, with an estimated government expenditure of ₹380 crore per month. Whether this initiative will replicate the success seen in other states remains to be seen. However, it is clear that cash transfer schemes targeted at women have proven to be a powerful political tool across India.
